Building the Artist
One thing I’ve learned recently is that perfectionism can slow you down.
Trust me, I’ve been trying to reach the point of a confident artist for YEEEEARS.
I’ve spent hours researching sketchbooks for the perfect paper, watching tutorials to develop the perfect style, planning projects for the perfect brand collaboration, and imagining the artist I want to become. It's very easy to spend time thinking about how to become an artist instead of actually practicing becoming one.
Oh, the amount of art supplies I’ve bought but haven’t used yet, because I’m too scared of messing up! Silly Me.
So this October, I’m giving myself a simple challenge:
🦊 Animal Sketch-a-Day
For 26 days throughout October, I'll create one animal sketch a day.
Some will probably be great.
Some will probably be questionable.
A few may look like a potato pretending to be a hippo.
But that is the point!
This challenge isn't about creating 26 perfect illustrations. It's about building consistency, practicing observation, filling pages, and proving to myself that progress comes from showing up.
Animals felt like the perfect subject because they're full of personality, movement, texture, and story. Plus, they give me an excuse to draw everything from piggies to elephants.
At the end of the month, I'll share:
My favorite sketches
My biggest lessons
What surprised me
What I'd do differently next time
So don’t forget to come back here to read more or watch on my YouTube Channel
And if you'd like to join me, I'd love that. Below, you can follow along with the prompt:
You don't have to draw animals. You don't even have to draw every day.
Just pick something you'd like to practice and give yourself permission to start.
Because we're not trying to make perfect art.
We're building the artist.
